The Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers will officially open their 2026 NFL preseason schedules with a Thursday night matchup at Acrisure Stadium, giving both organizations their first opportunity to evaluate their offseason work against live competition.
The game will be played on Thursday, August 13, 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time and 6:00 p.m. Central Time. Pittsburgh will host the matchup at Acrisure Stadium, while Green Bay begins its three-game preseason schedule on the road.
Local television coverage in Pittsburgh will be provided by CBS and KDKA-TV. Steelers supporters can also follow the game through the Steelers Radio Network on WDVE 102.5 FM and WBGG 970 AM. Green Bay’s broadcast will be available through the Packers TV Network, with additional Spanish-language coverage on Telemundo Wisconsin.
Although the final result will not count toward the regular-season standings, the matchup could become one of the most important evaluation nights of the summer for players competing near the bottom of both depth charts.
Established starters may receive only limited playing time as the coaching staffs balance preparation with injury prevention. That should create extended opportunities for rookies, reserve quarterbacks, developmental prospects and veterans attempting to secure the final positions on the opening-week roster.
Coaches will be watching much more than individual statistics. Communication, tackling, pass protection, ball security, penalty avoidance and special-teams execution could all influence future roster decisions. One impressive drive or defensive series could dramatically strengthen a player’s case, while turnovers and missed assignments could increase the pressure entering the remaining preseason games.
The meeting also carries notable preseason history. Green Bay and Pittsburgh have faced each other 26 times during the preseason, making the Steelers the Packers’ second-most frequent exhibition opponent. Their most recent preseason meeting came in 2018, when Green Bay earned a 51–34 victory at Lambeau Field. This will be their first preseason matchup in Pittsburgh since 2015.
The game has been designated as Pittsburgh’s Steelers Play Football game, featuring activities that celebrate youth and high school football players throughout the region. Area athletes are also expected to be recognized during halftime festivities at Acrisure Stadium.
Following the opener, Pittsburgh will remain home to face the New York Jets on August 21 before traveling to Buffalo for its preseason finale on August 27. Green Bay will visit the Denver Broncos on August 21 and conclude its preseason schedule at Lambeau Field against the Arizona Cardinals on August 28.
For Packers and Steelers fans, the Thursday night matchup marks the official return of football and the first public look at several new additions, developing prospects and potential breakout performers.
