PITTSBURGH — Packers football is officially back, and Green Bay wasted little time giving Packers Nation something to watch in its 2026 preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Under the lights at Acrisure Stadium, the Packers entered Thursday night’s matchup looking for much more than a preseason victory. This was the first opportunity for coaches to see whether weeks of training-camp work could translate into real game action — and several players immediately found themselves under the spotlight.

Jordan Love received an early opportunity to command Green Bay’s offense, providing fans with their first game look at the Packers quarterback this preseason. One of the most encouraging moments came when Love connected with Jayden Reed over the middle for a 19-yard gain, moving the offense into Pittsburgh territory. Green Bay eventually turned to kicker Trey Smack, who drilled a 37-yard field goal to put the Packers ahead 3–0 with 10:09 remaining in the first quarter. Smack also showed off his leg on a 58-yard attempt during the opening sequence, although a Steelers penalty allowed the drive to continue instead.
For Green Bay, however, this night is about much more than Love or the established names expected to carry the team once the regular season begins. Preseason football belongs to the players fighting for roster spots, increased roles and the attention of the coaching staff. Every third-down conversion, special-teams snap and defensive stop matters when the competition at the bottom of an NFL roster can be decided by only a handful of plays.
That’s why games like this can become so important. The final score will eventually fade from memory, but the performances coaches see on film could determine who survives the final roster decisions. Green Bay wants to identify players who remain composed under pressure, execute assignments correctly and make plays when opportunities suddenly appear.
For Packers Nation, the bigger message is already clear: football has returned. The green and gold are back on the field, Jordan Love has taken his first preseason snaps, and a new group of Packers is getting its opportunity to prove it belongs.
The road through the 2026 season has officially begun — and Green Bay’s young players are getting their first chance to make some noise.
