ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals have just made a move that might seem minor but could yield massive future rewards. The team officially claimed outfielder Everson Pereira off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, acquiring a former Top 100 prospect once hailed as one of baseball’s most promising young talents. What makes this acquisition particularly compelling is that the Cardinals gave up virtually nothing of significant value to get him. At 25 years old—with his potential still intact—he could prove to be one of St. Louis’s most notable “low-risk, high-reward” moves.

At first glance, claiming a player off waivers might not send shockwaves through MLB.

But a closer look at Everson Pereira’s background tells a different story.

There was a time when Pereira’s name appeared prominently on prospect rankings.

According to *Baseball America*, he was ranked the No. 78 prospect in all of MLB in 2023 and climbed as high as No. 42 in 2024.

Those aren’t the kind of rankings reserved for an ordinary player.

Pereira was once expected to become a key piece at the Major League level.

However, his path to the Majors didn’t go quite as planned.

And that is precisely where the Cardinals saw an opportunity.

The biggest reason for St. Louis’s optimism is his age.

Pereira is only 25 years old.

He isn’t a veteran who has already passed his prime.

Nor does he have hundreds of MLB games under his belt that would suggest his once-touted potential has vanished.

On the contrary, Pereira is still early enough in his career for a new organization to help him make adjustments, develop, and rediscover the form that once earned him such high praise from experts.

The Cardinals are currently in the process of rebuilding their roster with an eye toward the future.

Consequently, a young player with Pereira’s upside fits perfectly into their current strategy. Looking solely at his MLB record, one might easily harbor doubts about Pereira.

However, his Minor League track record tells a different story.

In 2023, while in the Yankees’ system, Pereira posted a slash line of .300/.373/.548—good for a .921 OPS—along with 18 home runs, 64 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and 17 doubles in just 81 games.

It was an incredibly impressive season.

That performance earned him his first shot at the Major Leagues.

However, the Majors proved to be a completely different challenge.

In his first 27 games with the Yankees in 2023, Pereira managed a slash line of just .151/.233/.194 and an OPS of .427.

Those numbers clearly fell short of expectations.

Yet, for a young player, these could simply be the initial growing pains.

Notably, Pereira didn’t fade away after those early struggles.

In the Minor Leagues in 2025, he continued to display significant power, recording 21 home runs and 57 RBIs in 78 games, alongside a .256/.359/.508 slash line.

These figures gave the Cardinals reason to believe that Pereira’s story was far from over.

A player once ranked among the top 50–100 prospects.

Someone who continues to generate power in the Minors.

An outfielder who is only 25 years old.

And all it took for the Cardinals to acquire him was a waiver claim.

This is the kind of gamble any team building for the future would want to take.

Pereira has moved through several organizations in a relatively short span of time.

He began his professional career in the New York Yankees’ system, playing there from 2021 to 2025.

He was subsequently traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in a deal involving José Caballero. Before the 2026 season, Pereira was traded by the Rays to the Chicago White Sox.

In Chicago, he played 27 MLB games, posting a slash line of .225/.284/.438 with a .722 OPS, 4 home runs, and 11 RBIs. This marked the best stretch of his Major League career to date, even though he also dealt with injuries.

Then, the White Sox placed him on waivers.

The Cardinals immediately stepped in.

Crucially, the Cardinals did not need Pereira to become a star right away.

They simply needed him to rediscover the form that once earned him a ranking as the No. 42 prospect in all of MLB by *Baseball America*.

That is a completely different objective.

St. Louis could afford to give Pereira time.

They could help him adjust his approach at the plate.

They could work with him on his defense.

And most importantly, they could create an environment where he could regain his confidence.

If successful, the Cardinals could acquire a valuable outfielder at virtually no cost in terms of top prospects.

This trade holds added significance given the Cardinals’ concerns regarding Jordan Walker’s status.

Walker is dealing with some physical issues, making outfield depth increasingly important.

Consequently, Pereira represents more than just a long-term project.

It offers dual value.

If Walker stays healthy, Pereira has time to develop.

If the Cardinals need a replacement, Pereira can be given a chance.

There is no scenario where this trade makes no sense.

During a rebuild, the biggest trade isn’t always the best one.

Sometimes, a team just needs to find the right player whom the market gave up on too soon.

Everson Pereira is exactly that kind of case.

He was once a Top 100 prospect.

He was once ranked in the Top 50.

He once posted a .921 OPS in a Minor League season.

He is still only 25 years old.

And he still has a chance to rewrite his MLB story.

The Cardinals have just given him a fresh start.

This could be the beginning of a resurgence.

Pereira no longer carries the pressure of proving he is a Top 50 prospect.

He simply needs to prove that those past positive evaluations weren’t a mistake.

The Cardinals don’t need him to become Aaron Judge.

They don’t need him to hit 30 home runs right away.

They just need to see signs that the potential is still there.

A stronger swing.

A better approach.

A few impressive games.

And then, everything could change.

Everson Pereira has arrived in St. Louis.

A former Top 100 prospect.

A 25-year-old player.

A low-risk opportunity for the Cardinals to take a chance.

And if St. Louis can truly “awaken” Pereira?

The Cardinals might have just found a gem that the rest of MLB overlooked.

He could also serve as a valuable insurance policy for the Cardinals should they need another outfielder.
